Rising waters in Lake Malawi and the Shire River are battering Mangochi, submerging homes and drowning parts of the district’s vital tourism sector.
Lakeshore lodges and resorts are now underwater as the surge swallows stretches of the shoreline.
Citing the fate, Mangochi District Council Spokesperson Bishop Witmos told URS that so far in Mdala village, T/A Chilawe, more than 50 households have been hit hard, with families displaced as floodwaters invade their homes.
Local officials warn the situation could worsen if water levels keep climbing, threatening more communities and Mangochi’s hospitality backbone.
