President Lazarus Chakwera has formally accepted defeat in the 2025 Presidential Election, congratulating rival Peter Mutharika of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on his win.
Chakwera reaffirmed this in his nation address which held in Lilongwe at Kamuzu Palace.
In his statement issued, Chakwera expressed gratitude to Malawian’s for their courage and faith in democracy. He specifically thanked citizens for the patience and dignity shown while queuing to vote.
He however commended the Malawi Electoral Commission and its chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, for managing the polls under pressure, citing that there were serious irregularities at tally centres in some parts of the country.
Chakwera therefore urged Malawi Congress Party MCP supporters to remain calm, avoid provocation, and trust the due process of law, as MEC is expected to declare the winner at 2 this afternoon.
