Security at First Vice President Justice Jane Ansah’s official residence in Lilongwe was thrown into high alert last night after a drone was caught hovering over the heavily guarded property.
Office of the Vice President spokesperson Richard Mveriwa confirmed the incident, revealing that security personnel intercepted the drone and apprehended its operator, who has since been handed over to the Malawi Police Service.
“The motive behind flying this drone is not yet known,” Mveriwa said. “But this is a protected area where drones are strictly prohibited. That’s why both the drone and the person controlling it were seized.” Mveriwa directed further inquiries to police, though authorities remain tight-lipped.
National Police spokesperson Lael Chimtembo could not be reached, and deputy spokesperson Alfred Chimthere was not answering calls at press time. The breach raises serious questions about surveillance and security around one of Malawi’s top officials. Police have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or the intent behind the flight.
