GOVERNMENT URGES CHIEFS TO FOSTER UNITY AND PRESERVE CULTURE

The Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Honorable Richard Chimwendo Banda, has called on chiefs nationwide to promote unity and preserve cultural heritage in their communities.

Banda made this appeal during the elevation ceremony of 27 chiefs from Mangochi, Machinga, and Balaka districts, held at Mangochi Stadium on Monday, September 1, 2025.27 chiefs were elevated, with 13 from Mangochi, 7 from Machinga, and 7 from Balaka.

Speaking to URS, Banda said the government also plans to provide motorcycles to chiefs to enhance their mobility and ability to manage their communities effectively, he praised the chiefs’ significant contributions to implementing developmental activities and reducing economic dependency.

Senior Chief Mapira, representing the elevated chiefs, thanked President Dr. Lazarus McCathy Chakwera’s administration for recognizing traditional leaders’ efforts.

Mapira promised to work in line with government initiatives and provide exemplary leadership.By acknowledging the crucial role of chiefs, the government aims to strengthen community development and cultural preservation.
