CONCERNS FOR IMPROVING MANGOCHI DISTRICT HOSPITAL

MY TWO HOURS

AT

MANGOCHI DISTRICT HOSPITAL

A Hospital with a;

Vast potential for improved health service delivery

Vast potential to venture into private health service delivery

Vast potential to expand specialised health service delivery through paying ward

Vast potential to upgrade into a fully flegged central referral hospital

On Friday, 13/03/2026, I had the opportunity to interact with the DHMT and inspect the hospital facility by visiting key delivery units

Service Delivery

The Hospital gets an annual funding of about K1b, and sees more patients than the Zomba Central Hospital which gets annual funding of K17b but sees less patients. The Mangochi DH is struggling in terms of limited funds, outstanding debts, deteriorating infrastructure and the like. What if just a billion is added to Mangochi DH, then most likely it will improve the health service delivery

Private Health Services

The Hospital has a vast wing that can be upgraded into a decent structure that can serve those who want to access the services by paying. DHMT can program a unique care for the patients that choose to pay. A population of 1.4 million surely guarantees patronage. A portion from the 10% of district based CDF(not constituency based CDF) can surely put us on proper footing on getting private services to the people of Mangochi

Specialised Services

Mangochi is the only district hospital in Malawi which offers specialised services because it has specialists. This is no small feat for a district hospital. Privatising such services to guarantee dignified access would work wonders for the hospital that is struggling with funding. All what is needed is to partition that vast wing earmarked for paying ward into decent patient cubicles. Mangichi has a wealthy client colony so to speak

Upgrade to a fully fleddged Central Hospital

I support requests made by the Mayor of the Mangochi Municipal Council and the Chairperson of the Mangochi District Council to the Minister of Health, when she visited, that the facility to upgraded to the status of a central hospital. Not only will it serve a high population well but also the people from the surrounding districts will benefit As indicated above, it is already seeing more patients compared to Zomba Central Hospital

Other pertinent issues

Food stuffs

Cases of food shortages are reported arising from what is considered as weak control system. I agree with the Chairperson of the Health Service Committee Cllr Yusuf that a meal card system should be introduced so that one meal is tied to a patient unlike the open system that lets in many guardians who get the food as well

Sanitation at the Guardian shelter

Sanitation challenges at the guardian shelter are serious. A guardian shelter is a community facility. Therefore, there is a need for a stronger community engagement strategy so that the guardian shelter is kept clean all the times

Patient welfare

Many issues come into patient welfare realm but I single out staff soliciting unauthorised payments from the patients. To deal with this vice, let us encourage victims to report these incidences. Now that we have hospital “ombudspersons” let those affected report to them. We encourage the ADCs and VDCs to pass information to the people in the villages about the existence of these officers to whom they can report these corrupt practices
